Worldwide, more than 1.7 billion people are affected or threatened by neglected tropical disease (NTD), many millions die from the consequences every year. The World Health Organization WHO currently counts 20 diseases in the group of NTDs, which, if left untreated, lead to chronic complaints, disabilities or even death.

All NTDs have in common that they receive almost no attention from the general public, from (applied) research, from government institutions and (pharmaceutical) companies, because they play little or no role in the affluent countries of the Global North.

NTDs mainly affect people in countries in the Global South, which is why they are also referred to as "diseases of poverty". They are widespread where people have no access to clean water, sanitary facilities and hygiene knowledge and materials (WASH) and where there is a lack of medical care.

There is still no good and effective therapy for many of these diseases, but if medication is available, it often has terrible side effects. Likewise, many of them do not know how they are transmitted. There is a lack of funds for research.

All of this and more play a role in why the risk of impoverishment is so great for those affected: dwindling performance, high treatment costs, side effects, exclusion and stigmatization. In many countries, those affected are also discriminated against by law.

RedAid Nigeria wants to break this vicious circle of poverty and disease in its States of operation with holistic, cross-sectoral approaches!
